Carmaker Toyota surprised many with Woven City, a mainly car-free city that the company is building at the base of Mount Fuji. This year the first 100 citizens will move to Woven City. Renowned architect BIG designed the houses that are mostly made from wood. The plans for the smart city were announced in 2020.
The chairperson of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, said Toyota will likely lose money with the Woven City project, but that “Toyota has a responsibility to invest in our collective future, to share what we’ve learned with others, and support new ideas that benefit the planet and its people.” Woven City is “a living laboratory where the residents are willing participants, giving inventors the opportunity to freely test their ideas in a secure, real-life setting.”
Many countries are implementing smart city features or are planning new cities that would be technologically advanced and data-driven with a citizen-focussed urban eco-system.
In Stellenbosch the planned Adam Tas Corridor displays many features of a sustainable and inclusive modern city. Like the Adam Tas plans, the MIT Technology Review states that smart city designs should respect the potential charm of city life. Technology should focus on ways to shorten commute times, speed the construction of affordable housing, allow for efficient public transport and reduce carbon emissions by providing less polluting transportation alternatives to the car.
