Pius Pahl

1909 – 2003

Pius Pahl was a German architect who married a South African woman and then moved to Stellenbosch shortly after World War II. He opened up a practice in Stellenbosch,  resulting in the town now having the largest collection of private homes designed in the Bauhaus tradition.

Hannes Meiring

1934 – 2010

Hannes Meiring is in Potchefstroom gebore, die vierde van vyf kinders, en deel van ’n gesin en ook groter familie met akademiese en politieke invloed. Hy het grootgeword in Stellenbosch, waar sy vader hoogleraar in opvoedkunde was. ’n Belangstelling in argitektuur is aangewakker deur ’n oom, At Meiring, later die eerste hoogleraar in argitektuur aan die Universiteit van Pretoria.

Colin Tod Welch

1937 – 2015

Die sleutel tot sinvolle stedelike omgewings is multi-dissiplinêr. Dit lê erens tussen argitektuur en stads-en streekbeplanning, en behels veral ook stedelike ontwerp. Dit was die oortuiging van Professor Colin Tod Welch, wat tot sy aftrede in 2001 vir 20 jaar aan die stuur gestaan het van die destydse Departement van Stads- en Streekbeplanning aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch

Paul le Roux

Born 1930

Leading 20th Century Stellenbosch Architect
Paul le Roux was awarded a Rhodes bursary for study in England on matriculating from the Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, but decided against accepting it because his dream was to study architecture at the University of Cape Town.
The words of Sir Winston Churchill, one of Le Roux’s heroes, were decisive: “We shape buildings and then they shape our lives”.

Chris Stander

1934 – 2010

Chris Stander studied at the University of Cape Town and commenced working as architect when he completed his studies, initially for Lochner, Pauw and Green and later for Swart and Stander. He was known for his scrupulous and neat architectural drawings and work, and as someone who always took time to think and organise his thoughts before saying or doing anything.

Jochem Mars

1931 – 2013

Jochem Adolf Mars is op 7 April 1931 op ‘n suikerplantasie in Badangtaro, NoordSumatra, Indonesië gebore. As argitek was Mars bekend vir ‘n vermoë om ‘n gevoel van ruimte te skep.
