The theft of copper plaques on historical buildings is still a problem, not only in Stellenbosch but also elsewhere in South Africa. Copper plaques are expensive and can quickly become the target of thieves. Blue ceramic plaques seem to be the solution but is expensive and must be ordered in large quantities. Plastic, and electronic applications to make information available outside a building are used with growing success in other countries. But this also asks for a bigger expense before the investment is paid for. In the meantime, theft of copper plaques is still a problem. The two photo’s below where taken on two consecutive days in the centre of Stellenbosch at Devonshire House, near the top of Church Street.
