The sweetness of an intelligent design remains

25 November 2019

Benjamin Franklin presumably said that “the bitterness of poor quality remains long after we forget the sweetness of a low price”. This saying is turned upside down in the design of a family home which won the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) ‘s award for the best house of 2019. The Irish architects, McGonigle McGrathhe, designed and built the house on an extremely tight budget and deliberately used simple details in their design. The walls are white, rendered concrete, and the roof is zinc. The president of RIBA said the design demonstrates “that life-enhancing architecture does not have to cost the earth”.
