The Rhenish complex may be the most neglected and under-utilised historical heritage site of Stellenbosch, while the gardens at Voorgelegen and the Rhenish Manse, and buildings such as Voorgelegen, the Rhenish Manse and Leipoldt House do not feature as part of the experience of most of the people in Stellenbosch.
In combination with the adjacent Meulplein and the Braak, it offers rich possibilities for sound urban renewal, which could make the experience of place and of heritage both more inclusive and more immediate.
The Stellenbosch Heritage Foundation has traced two earlier studies of interest on the Rhenish complex and adjacent areas by Martin Kruger and Penny Pistorius and Stuart Harris, respectively.
During 2012 Virgini Ryckeboer and Cyril Carton from the Artesis Hogeschool in Antwerp, Belgium completed a study, Het erfgoedbeleid van Stellenbosch. Het opstellen van ondersteunende richtlijnen om tot een duurzame planning van de stad en haar erfgoed te komen. Die Braak en het Rijnse Complex als katalysator.
