An erstwhile South African architect, Brian Vermeulen, is one of the winners of the Building Design for British architecture in 2016. The partnership Cottrell & Vermeulen won the overall gold award and also the award for education architect of the year for a new library and resource centre for Brentwood, an independent school in Essex. It is the second time since 2011 that the partnership won the award for the best education architecture. The award for the best residential architecture went to the Canadian architect Jamie Fobert. His house Levring had already received several other awards.
