A Boston suburb’s new law to protect bicycle lanes

Apr 29, 2019 | Forum, News

The city council of Cambridge, the university suburb of Boston, passed a new law on the 8th of April that mandates the addition of bicycle lanes on all streets due for upgrades. Although this process will happen slowly, Cambridge is now the most progressive cycling city in the United States.  According to the new law a further requirement is for bike lanes to be protected from roadways with vertical barriers. This change in policy is a result of the collaboration that started in 2017 between the activist group, Cambridge Bicycle Safety, and the city council. According to the city councilor, Dennis Carlone, the benefits of this law include the promotion of residents’ personal health, a cleaner environment and higher retail sales.
