La Motte introduces a series of Interesting Talks:
The La Motte Museum will be hosting a series of very interesting talks during the upcoming
months.
Thursday, 14 September 2012 Cape Dutch Architecture – Dr Matilda Burden
With four Provincial Monuments (formerly known as National Monuments), La Motte is the
ideal place to host a talk on Cape Dutch Architecture. The acclaimed expert on South African
culture and history, Dr Matilda Burden will discuss the relevance of Cape Dutch Architecture in
today’s world with reference to “kalkbrandery” along the West Coast and its relevance for Cape
Architecture.
Thursday, 11 October 2012 Pierneef and what influenced him – Amanda Botha
Busy with research for a book on acclaimed South African artist, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, well-
respected art journalist, Amanda Botha will focus on what influenced Pierneef – especially his
experiences and education in the Netherlands – and with reference to his private collection on
exhibition at La Motte.
Thursday, 8 November 2012 Painting, Print-making and Ceramics – Ella-Lou O’Meara
As part of the Franschhoek Art in Clay Festival and the La Motte Museum’s exhibition of
ceramics by women potters, join us for an interesting talk by a modern practising
woman potter, Ella-Lou O’Meara. She will talk about the connection between painting,
print-making and ceramics and how these art forms have developed through history,
with reference to China, Italy, the rest of Europe and with special attention to the
ceramics that came to the Cape and can today still be seen in the Castle of Good Hope.
She will also touch on the technical aspects and illustrate the magic of the process.
The Franschhoek Art in Clay Festival runs from 27 October to 16 November, for more
