Statement of Significance
The remains of the early farmstead evident at Welgevallen represent a clear reminder of the
agricultural and social history of Stellenbosch. They are of provincial rather than of national
significance and would fit well with the concept of Grade II provincial heritage sites in the National
Heritage Resources Act of 1999 (Deacon, 1999:2). Additionally, the site is of some scientific
importance, due to its role as a research farm, and also related to the development of the wine
varietal “Pinotage” at the Cape.
Landscape Significance
The werf includes lines of mature trees and has established planting.
