"Constructed by J Joubert as a school building for the new Stellenbosch Gymnasium, which opened on 1 March 1866. The building was only occupied on 1 July, when classes moved from the Old Reading Room. The first pupils matriculated in 1870, and in 1873 four pupils obtained their BA from this building. It was used by the Gymnasium until 1874, when the school moved to the corner of Plein and Ryneveld Streets."
