Description
A modest, vernacular cottage, single storey and with a rectangular plan and two end gables. The stoep extends to full width of the house with a pergola above, supported on Doric-style concrete columns. The house is surrounded by mature oak and jacaranda trees. Plumbago hedges in front of the cottage add character. An unintrusive garage is tucked behind the cottage to the south.
The cottage is located on the high ground, overlooking the Rustenburg farm. The “longbarn” and
“Poplar Cottage to the north complete the ”cluster”, but are of lesser heritage significance.

Statement of Significance
Simon’s cottage is of historical and cultural interest, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the
practice of agriculture in the valley and patterns of dwelling in this particular rural landscape. The
cottage contributes to the rustic landscape by virtue of its simple architecture, and treed context.
While it is located within the culturally rich Grade 1 Ida’s Valley context, it would not warrant a very
high heritage grading.
Landscape Significance
The surrounding landscaping and mature trees contribute to the sense of place.
