Description
Like Heather Cottage, this is a Bakeresque Arts & Crafts style single storey structure which, until recently, had a thatched roof. Unfortunately roof sheeting has been applied. The property is densely wooded, and so blends into the rural environment. The house is architecturally modest. It is located on a bend in the road, and so has some landmark significance. Carport structures and other auxiliary structures complete the complex.

Interior Description

History
The land is part of the Schoongezicht farm, one of the earlier grants in the valley, and a deduction
of Rustenburg, made by the then-owner of Rustenburg, Jacob Eksteen, for his son-in-law, Arend
Brink, in 1810.
Grouping with other sites
The site forms part of the Ida’s Valley Grade I area.
Evidence of Demolition
Contextual Design
As above, the landscaped surrounds are of high heritage significance
Invasive Elements
The new metal roof sheeting detracts from the cottage.
Heritage Vulnerability
Removal of the landscaping/mature trees would negate their important mitigatory role within the valley.

Statement of Significance
Schoongezicht cottage is of historical and cultural interest, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the
practice of agriculture in the valley and patterns of dwelling in this particular rural landscape. The
cottage contributes nominally to the rustic landscape by virtue of its simple cottage architecture,
and heavily treed context. The sheet metal roof does detract. While it is located within the
culturally rich Grade 1 Ida’s Valley context, it would not warrant a very high heritage grading.
Landscape Significance
The homestead site is heavily treed, and this wooded landscape mitigates any suburbanising effect
that might otherwise be created by the presence of this house within the cultural landscape.
Therefore, the landscaping around the cottage is of high heritage importance.
