History

The hamlet was established after 1834 for freed slaves, and was set up by the Wesleyan church.
Apparently, a £100 donation was made by Mrs Brackenbury of Raithby Hall in Yorkshire for the
establishment of the hamlet. 800 freed slaves took up land there.

Statement of Significance

The site has high historical significance as a mission settlement for freed slaves. The primary significance of the settlement is its strong settlement pattern of occupation, which made physically manifest the relationship of the community to spirituality through the juxtaposition of the commonage space (the "heart" of the settlement) with the church and school. The area has historical, urban, spiritual, social, community and contextual significance. It is a rare remaining mission settlement site. It has an association with the history of slavery at the Cape.
