Description
A cluster of four workers’ houses on the edge of the Ida’s Valley werf closest to the town, these cottages, with three vaulted modules, front stoeps and white walls, create a small werf of their own. The design intent was to create economical, robust and architecturally sympathetic houses on the edge of a historically significant farm werf, and this was ably achieved. Large oak trees and whitewashed boundary walls embed the houses further within their context.

Statement of Significance
These structures are a rare example of a modernist aesthetic being applied on a historic farm werf
in service of the farm workers. It is clear that the houses are both “of their time” but contextually
sensitive. They have been identified by the architectural organisational DOCOMOMO as signifi cant modernist structures.
Landscape Significance
There are some mature trees around the cottages. These, together with the whitewashed boundary
walls (which seem to pre-date the cottages) embed the structures within a farm werf context.
