History
The farm is a deduction of Rustenburg, The diagram dates from 1925, and the concurrent transfer
was in favour of F. H. Cooper. The 1920s ushered a new economic period into the valley, when
smaller farms became viable. Hugh Cooper kept bees, and encouraged orchard owners to plant
flowering gums, which are a part of the cultural landscape of the valley to this day (Kantor et al,
2008: 18).
Grouping with other sites
The site forms part of the Ida’s Valley Grade I area.

Statement of Significance
While the physical structures on Hymettus Farm are not of great age, nor of architecural distinction,
the period houses and planted cadastral boundaries in this area introduced new patterns to the
landscape in the early part of the 20th Century, and so is of historical and cultural interest, reflect ing the ongoing evolution of the practice of agriculture in the valley and patterns of dwelling in this
particular rural landscape. While it is located within the culturally rich Grade 1 Ida’s Valley context,
the individual structures and elements on the farm would not warrant a very high heritage grading.
Landscape Significance
The landscaping of this farm, and farms of similar age, is established and consists of species that were
fashionable during the early 20th Century, and were useful for promoting pollinisation of orchards.
