Description
The original plan form is a typical 1940’s U-plan with two projecting bays to the rear of the house, and a Bakeresque Arts & Crafts style single storey structure with thatched roof. The property is densely wooded, and so blends into the rural environment, despite its suburban character. The house is architecturally modest. c2014 extensions include a new double storey wing to the south-east, set behind the house, and a small extension to the west. Two newer cottages are located further up the hill, but have no heritage significance.

Statement of Significance
Heather Cottage is a 1940’s, thatched residential cottage. It has limited heritage value in itself,
and is unobtrusively situated above and away from the historic Rustenburg and Schoongezicht
farmsteads. It contributes nominally to the rustic landscape by virtue of its simple cottage architec ture, and heavily treed context. Alterations c2014 have extended the cottage significantly, but all
within the style of the original core. While it is located within the culturally rich Grade 1 Ida’s Valley
context, in itself it would not warrant a very high heritage grading.
Landscape Significance
The homestead site is heavily treed, and this wooded landscape mitigates any suburbanising effect
that might otherwise be created by the presence of these houses within the cultural landscape.
Therefore, the landscaping around these houses is of high heritage importance.
