Description
Classic rectangular werf. The main homestead is H-shaped and protrudes into the werf to the south, while the outbuildings "hold the line" of the werf wall. The homestead has been restored from the late 1970s (Andre Pretorius' c1970s photos show it under iron roof sheeting - it is now thatched). Mature trees planted in lines emphasise the spatial structuring of the whole.

Interior Description
History
Like many farms in this valley, the land was owned by the widow Margaretha de Villiers, and
granted to one of her sons, Jan Roux. It was this family that were responsible for the historic buildings
on the farm.
Grouping with other sites
Doornbosch, Blaauwklippen. These werfs also have structures defining the edges of a roughly
rectangular werf space.
Evidence of Demolition
Contextual Design
A fine example of a classic, rectangular Cape Dutch werf.
Invasive Elements
Heritage Vulnerability
The security apparatus around the werf detracts from the whole.

Statement of Significance
The Groenrivier werf is a fine example of a rectangular werf, and shows buildings and landscaping of
historic, architectural and aesthetic significance. The werf has been slightly over-sanitised through
restoration, but remains a fine example. The site has historical, architectural and scenic/contextual
significance.
Landscape Significance
The planting in the werf reinforces prevailing axes and geometries.
