Description

Glenelly is approached via a curving road that provides a view of the homestead set against the werf and surrounding hills and mountain peaks. Since 2008, an additional level has been added to the homestead, and while the Georgian shuttered French doors and gable have been retained, the proportions of the homestead have been altered. The same applies for several of the agricul tural buildings making up the werf, including the barns, silo, managers office and so on.

History

Glenelly was subdivided off from the farm Ida’s Valley and Nazareth in 1860 (CMP, 2008: 17).
It retains some worker’s housing, which is unique, but unfortunately these structures have been
refurbished since the 2008 CMP study, and so have lost some of their vernacular character

Grouping with other sites

The site forms part of the Ida’s Valley Grade I area.

Evidence of Demolition

Contextual Design

The werf has landmark significance within the sub-valley to the west.

Invasive Elements

The wine cellar and restaurant building, although tucked away, is of a foreign architectural language.

Heritage Vulnerability

Encroachment from the town.

Statement of Significance

The dwellings and farmsteads of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – including Glenelly – are of historical and cultural interest, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the practice of agriculture in the valley and patterns of dwelling in this particular rural landscape. TheCMP study recognised the Glenelly homstead, Glenelly approach road and Glenelly workers’ housing as having significance. However, recent alterations have negatively impacted heritage authenticity. It forms part of a landscape of Grade I cultural landscape significance.

Landscape Significance

By the end of the 20th century, vineyards, pastures and fodder crops had become the dominant landscape of the middle valley, with orchards limited to hilly slopes in the southwest at Glenelly and Glenbawn, and to the north-east at Kelsey Farm and High Rustenberg. The landscape pattern of orchards is now under some threat, as farmers tend to favour vineyards.
