Statement of Significance
The site comprises a very fine and significant werf, cluster of structures and mature vegetation and
trees. Although there have been alterations, the original homestead (1693) is on axis with the gable
end of the cellar on a subtle ridgeline: a unique juxtaposition not normally found in Cape farm
complexes. The site has significance on many grounds: the scenic and well vegetated landscape
and the specific position of the farm nucleus in it; aesthetic, architectural and social history (inclusive
of the role of resident Italian prisoners of war in its restoration under the Podlashuk's ownership). There
is also agricultural and economic significance in the 1940s fruit and wine farming products sent to
market via the railway siding on the farm.
