Interior Description

History

The area between [Banhoek Road and Merriman Avenue], was what could be called the 'District
Six' of Stellenbosch. It was laid out c1860 on higher ground to house a predominantly Coloured and
Muslim population of tradesmen, which it remained until it was proclaimed a White 'group area' in
the 1960s (Fransen, 2004: 189).

Grouping with other sites

89, 91, 93 Banghoek Road form part of this area.

Evidence of Demolition

Contextual Design

These modest terrace houses, single storey with pitched roofs and street-facing stoeps, as well as original joinery, in combination create an extremely fine, urban streetscape.

Statement of Significance

These houses contribute to one of the finest streetscapes in the province. They represent one of the few remaining stretches of building fabric from "Die Vlakte", an area of Stellenbosch from which people were forcibly removed under the Group Areas Act, and where many structures were demolished. As a whole, these sites have high contextural, scenic, urban, historical and social/intangible heritage signifiance.

Landscape Significance

The avenue of oak trees along the street are proclaimed National Monuments.
