Heritage Analysis
SITE & STRUCTURE DESCRIPTION: Settlement founded for emancipated slaves. Linear village with a central, slightly crescent-shaped green/common. The Methodist/Wesleyan church is located to the east as you enter the hamlet, and is rectangular and under pitched roof with bell-tower, c1861. The school is located alongside the church.
History: The hamlet was established after 1834 for freed slaves, and was set up by the Wesleyan church.
Apparently, a £100 donation was made by Mrs Brackenbury of Raithby Hall in Yorkshire for the
establishment of the hamlet. 800 freed slaves took up land there.
