| SITE & STRUCTURE DESCRIPTION: | An extremely fine Cape Dutch werf, from the historical to the urban/werf scale and architectural level. "Navarre is matchless, and its facade one of the finest in the Cape. It is a narrow H-shaped house, one back wing being new. The gable is dated 1815. The woodwork of the facade is yellowwood. The interior is well preserved" (Fransen, 2004: 243). The rectangular werf space is exquisitely composed, with werf wall, outbuildings, avenues of trees, axial approach road and the layout of vineyards and dams all creating a fine Cape Dutch werf. | ||||||
| History: |
Granted to Daniel Josais Malan in 1796, with the house being built in 1814 by his son, Johannes Jacobus Malan (Fransen, 2004: 243). |
